Create and Dance


The Royal Opera House’s Create and Dance programme provides:

  • a creative learning programme, created with teachers, providing ballet for kids in primary schools across England.

  • classroom-based and digital activities, as well as resources to encourage dancing at home, with strong curriculum links, giving a better understanding of dance for kids, and unlocking their imagination and creativity.

  • teacher training, classroom films, lesson plans and resources to use in ways that suit the needs of the teachers and their students.

Create and Design

The Royal Opera House’s Create and Design programme provides:

  • A creative learning programme that meets the Key Stage 2 curriculum requirements for Design and Technology, created with teachers, for primary schools across England.

  • Free classroom-based and digital activities, giving children an understanding of set design for a specific ballet or opera, unlocking the music and stories as well as their imagination and creativity. The activities encourage the testing of simple craft ideas for kids, which promote autonomy of thought.

  • Free teacher training, classroom films, lesson plans and resources to use in ways that suit the needs of teachers and their students. Teachers do not need any previous knowledge of ballet, opera or stage design in order to take part.

Create and Sing

The Royal Opera House’s Create and Sing programme provides:

  • a creative learning programme, created with teachers, providing songs for kids in primary schools across England.

  • classroom-based and digital activities, with strong curriculum links, to give better understanding of singing and opera for kids, unlocking their imagination and creativity.

  • teacher training, classroom films, lesson plans and resources to use in ways that suit the needs of the teachers and their students.

Join the Royal Opera House’s Create and Sing programme this summer for a pair of free online workshops. What is Opera? creatively engages classes (KS1-2) with exploring and making opera in their classroom, as well getting a look behind the scenes of the Royal Opera House. Easy to access and deliver, What is Opera? Provides participants with a fun, focused and creative summer project, and an innovative introduction to opera.

Part 1 – available from 6th June online: a 60 minute pre-recorded workshop video where registered schools will receive a link to the workshop video, presented by ROH music and drama practitioners, as well as receiving accompanying digital resources on our ROH Learning Platform. The workshop includes:

  • Welcome to the Project

  • What is Opera? A look behind the scenes at ROH

  • Warmups

  • Learn a Song (‘Walk on Tip Toe’ from The Magic Flute)

  • Setting the Creative task

Part 1 concludes with setting your class a creative task: to practice the song covered in the workshop and create some staging for it (ROH share some ideas in the workshop to help get you started).

Part 2 – 10am 7th July, live digital workshop: a 60 minute workshop hosted via Microsoft Teams inviting schools to join the ROH music and drama practitioners who will rehearse and lead participants through a culmination performance of ‘Walk on Tip toe’. The workshop will include:

  • Welcome Back

  • Live rehearsal of ‘Walk on Tip Toe’

  • Performance and Q&A with a Royal Opera singer

  • Final Culmination Performance

ROH Youth Opera Company Recruitment

The ROH Youth Opera Company will be recruiting new members this August. London based-schools participating in the ‘What is Opera?’ workshops will receive information after Part-2 detailing how parents can register their child for an audition workshop.
